When Shah Rukh Khan revealed that he wanted to be an army officer and not an actor: 'They told me to cut my hair and I said no'
Long before Shah Rukh Khan was dubbed the “King of Bollywood,” he had envisioned a very different path for himself serving his nation as an army officer. As stated by Economic Times, in an old interview with Rajiv Shukla, the actor stated, “I wanted to be an army officer. However, when I was at the army school, they told me to cut my hair and I said no," explaining how that one decision pointed him in the direction of stardom rather than the army.
But Lt. Col. Raj Kumar Kapoor, the show’s creator and director, soon noticed something special. The camera, he said, “adored” Shah Rukh Khan. His raw energy, expressive eyes, and magnetic presence stood out so powerfully that the entire narrative was restructured to make Abhimanyu Rai the central character, marking SRK’s breakout moment.
A childhood dream to wear the uniform ultimately became artistic reality in the film as he portrayed a military officer. Now, in reality, he hasn't served a day in the armed forces, but his portrayals of military officers has certainly inspired millions of people in the real world and in films. This clearly demonstrates that destiny had something grander in mind for this boy who just wanted to march in the military uniform.
From aspiring cadet to on-screen commando
In 1989, he was introduced to acting by the wildly popular TV show 'Fauji'. The show tracked the lives of young recruits in the Indian Army put through the rigors of training to be commandos, as they experienced challenges, constructed friendships, and learned a sense of discipline. 'Fauji' was a natural introduction to SRK's charisma and intensity which subsequently made him a household name worldwide.A supporting role that became a breakthrough
Interestingly, 'Fauji' wasn’t originally built around Shah Rukh. The lead role was meant for actor Rakesh Sharma, who played Vikram Rai, while SRK’s Abhimanyu Rai, based on Colonel Sanjoy Banerjee of the Bengal Sappers, was supposed to be secondary. But Lt.
Returning to the uniform with 'Main Hoon Na'
Years later, Shah Rukh donned the military uniform on screen in Farah Khan's 'Main Hoon Na', where he portrayed a fictional character, Major Ram Prasad Sharma, an Indian Army officer appointed to protect a general’s daughter and help to reconcile his estranged family. The film had action, patriotism, tears, and, of course, more to show about Shah Rukh Khan. From dreaming of the army to ruling the industry
When the film was released, it became one of the most successful films by earning ₹84 crore at the box office, making it the second highest grossing film after 'Veer-Zaara' in 2004. From the TV mini-series 'Fauji' to 'Main Hoon Na', it has truly come full circle for the actor.end of article
