Pics: Varun, Alia, Anushka weave magic at Mirchi Music Awards 2017

It was a night of music, masti and magic as Bollywood came together for the ninth Royal Stag Mirchi Music Awards 2017 on Saturday evening. One of the biggest music awards of the country, the event was held at the Dome at NSCI in Worli, Mumbai. The biggest names came under one roof to honour and celebrate the talent in the world of music.

One of Bollywood’s most loved couples – Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt – added magic to the proceedings with their presence. The ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ stars took to the stage and entertained everyone with their funny banter. Not just that, the two even grooved to ‘Tamma Tamma Again’ as the crowd went into a tizzy. While Varun looked smashing in a black kurta and pyjama, the actress was a sight to behold in an all-black ensemble.

You know you’re in for a fun ride when you have Diljit Dosanjh on stage. The singer-actor, who will soon be seen in ‘Phillauri’, entertained the audience with his numbers. His ‘Phillauri’ co-star Anushka Sharma too joined him on the stage. The actress looked lovely in golden pants and a golden-and-black embroidered jacket which she teamed with minimal make-up and sleek hair. The highlight of the evening was when the two spontaneously broke into bhangra steps.

It was a big night for Karan Johar’s ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ as the film walked away with many awards. Pritam Chakraborty won the Music Composer of the Year for his work in the romance drama while Arijit Singh bagged the award for the Male Vocalist of the Year for his rendition of the title track. Urvashi Rautela, who looked gorgeous in a grey-and-black ensemble, presented the award to the singing sensation.The film won the Album of the Year award and Amitabh Bhattacharya won the Best Lyricist award for '​ Channa Mereya'. Jonita Gandhi won the Female Vocalist of the Year for ‘Gilehriyaan’ from ‘Dangal’.

Karan Johar was honoured with the Make It Large Award. The filmmaker was his usual humorous self as he joked that the award had come 30 years too soon to him and said it almost felt like a lifetime achievement award. “But I’m so overwhelmed I could cry,” he said as the host for the evening, Sonu Nigam cheered him on beside him. Sonu even had the audience in splits as he performed a laugh riot parody.

Usha Uthup was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mirchi Music Awards 2017. It was an emotional moment for the singer as she turned teary-eyed while accepting the award from the legendary Anandji Virji Shah. Subhash Ghai, Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamoorthi, Talat Aziz and many other singers took to the stage to honour Usha Uthup who has mesmerized the audience with her deep baritone for years together.

The biggest music award ceremony of the country witnessed some electric performances by the best talent in the music industry. If Badshah left the audience grooving to his fast-paced numbers, Armaan Malik belted out beautiful songs that would soothe one’s soul. Stellar acts by Shalmali Kholgade, Papon, Sukhwinder Singh and many others left the audience wanting for more.

Shilpa Shetty was a headturner as she arrived in a black-and-white gown with a plunging neckline. She completed the look with red lips and a wispy bun and the result – well, she was dressed to kill! The actress was seen having a gala time as she bonded with Subhash Ghai and Usha Uthup. Sonu Nigam’s funny antics on stage left the ‘Dhadkan’ actress in splits.
