Rajkumar Hirani admits to making changes in ‘Sanju’ to create empathy for Sanjay Dutt

Rajkummar Hirani’s ‘Sanju’ not only went on to become one of the massive hits at the box office, but also helped both Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt to elevate their filmy career. Although the film gained appreciations from all quarters, it was also criticised for not showing all the aspects of the actor’s life.

Recently, the filmmaker confessed that he made changes in ‘Sanju’ in order to create some empathy for the actor’s character as he is ultimately the protagonist of the film. Speaking about the same, he reportedly stated that when the first edit was ready and was screened for people, they hated him and said that they did not want to watch him on screen. The director said that as he went on to make a true story, he had not taken any efforts to create empathy for him. However, he forgot that he is also the hero of the film.

Hirani also reportedly admitted to adding few scenes to create that empathy which was not there earlier. The part where the actor tries to kill himself after the verdict is out was added later. However, that too didn’t quite do well for the people.

According to the filmmaker, every film is a journey. Some things work and some don’t. Although he still see flaws in the film, he tries his best and hopes his best is good enough.

This is why Ranbir Kapoor did not want to get a mimicry artiste on board for 'Sanju'

Ranbir Kapoor left everyone in sheer amazement when his pictures as Sanjay Dutt were leaked online last year. As much as the makers were trying to keep the look concealed, the paparazzi were successful in getting a glimpse at Ranbir’s transformation for ‘Sanju’. Ever since then the excitement around the film hasn’t died down even a tadbit.

Recently while interacting with a daily, Ranbir Kapoor revealed that as part of his prep, he met stand-up comic Dr Sanket Bhosale, who is known to mimic Dutt effortlessly. Even though he praised Dr Bhosale’s mimicry skills, he said that Rajkumar Hirani’s vision of showing Sanjay Dutt was different and that was the reason why he didn’t choose a mimicry artiste.

Ranbir said that Dr Bhosale does a comic version of a drunk Sanjay and that wasn’t something Ranbir is portraying in ‘Sanju’. Ranbir is playing him all the way from when he was 20 till today. The makers have explored Sanjay’s human side in the film and so it wouldn’t have been appropriate to get the mimicry artiste on board.

Ranbir concluded by revealing that the biggest challenge he faced was walking the fine line between "mimicking someone and trying to become the person". He further professed that since a lot of people copy Sanjay Dutt and his style, his job became even harder because he didn't want to look like a caricature.
