It’s great news for music lovers. Finally, nightclubs are warming up to Bangla live acts and how! Party animals were seen dancing to the tunes of Strange Factory and Bolepur Bluez, who gave eclectic performances at The Big Ben, New Kenilworth Hotel, on Friday night. For starters, Strange Factory presented an urbanized take on the folk sound of Bengal. Before singing a baul song, ‘Nadi bhora dheu’, vocalist Arko said, “The common allegation levelled against city musicians these days is that they have turned into bauls.
But it isn’t easy to be a baul.” While that had the listeners break into loud rounds of applause, Arko, pointing out at Mintu Das Baul, with whom the band is closely associated, added: “He is my brother. He’ll know it best. People think that the philosophy of bauls is complicated, but there’s nothing simpler than that.” Guitarist-vocalist Rajkumar, whose modern songs were an instant hit, explained, “It has taken me 10 years to come up with the kind of music I always wanted to do. All the songs are written by either Arko or me.” Next, Bolepur Bluez gave the crowd a taste of blues-rock, sending everyone at the nightclub into raptures. Even before the one-hour performance came to a close, Basudeb Das baul had already danced his way into the hearts of all and sundry.
