When Tapas Relia started composing for films, he knew the uphill task ahead — of making people understand the importance of background score. But many films later, including Ferrari Ki Sawaari, Tapas believes there is still a long way to go. He says, “When I say I score background music for films, people say, ‘Woh kya hai’.” He adds, “Background score is as important as the dialogues. An emotional or a comic scene can actually fail to draw an appropriate response from the audience without the right background score.”Citing the example of Ferrari..., he says, “When Sharman goes to steal the car, I created music which would make the audience gasp in excitement. And that is what happened.”Hailing from Ahmedabad, Tapas did jingles for ad films before his first brush happened with film music. “Hanuman was my first film as a music director. It was later that I scored background music too. After that, I did Return Of Hanuman, Mod, Bumm Bumm Bole and Toonpur Ka Superrhero.”Currently working on two untitled ventures, Tapas wants filmmakers to take background score more seriously. “I got four months to work on the background score for Ferrari... and the result is there to see. The absence of a good background score is like reading a book without the right words.”
