Asia's largest jazz festival, 'Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival', a three-day affair concluded last week. Attended by locals, expats and tourists from all over the world, India too had a representative this time around. Renowned jazz, funk, blues and rock vocalist
Joe Alvares
along with his troupe, 'The Indian All Stars' comprising artistes
Gino Banks
,
Sheldon D'Silva
,
Tubby
,
Karan Joseph
,
Sarosh Nanavaty
and
Ishita Chakravarty
performed at the fest.
The ensemble gave a full-house performance at four concerts over a period of six days, including a lecture performance at a music University. They also met trumpeter and composer, Chris Bottia and other Grammy award winning performers and musical icons like Patti Austin, David Foster.
Joe, who performed his original compositions from his soon-to-release albums, also presented a few covers. Having a personal encounter with superstar STING, the two not only discussed music but also unwinded by going for a swim, early in the morning. The highlight of the festival was a night performance called 'Jams', which was held in a hotel. Artistes from all over the world not only jammed with each other but also doubled up as a sincere and keen audience. A synthesis of jazz with Indian elements, it sure was a treat!
