​Padma Shri


AR Rahman was given the Padma Shri in 2000, India's fourth-highest civilian award, for his notable contribution to arts and music. Nicknamed the "Mozart of Madras," Rahman transformed Indian cinema music with his new-age music compositions in Tamil and Hindi films, beginning with ‘Roja.’ His music was globally appreciated, and he became a renowned figure in global music.

AR Rahman received two Oscars in 2009 for his contribution to Slumdog Millionaire. He won the awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (‘Jai Ho,’ co-written with Gulzar). His score for the movie received international acclaim for blending Indian and Western styles, becoming the first Indian to take two Oscars in one evening.

A.R. Rahman won his seventh National Film Award for Best Music Director (Background Score) for Ponniyin Selvan: I at the 70th National Film Awards. A.R.
