Javed-Mohsin: This trend of independent music will go a long way - Exclusive

Music composer duo Javed Mohsin is one of the most loved musical artists. They have been known for their beautiful melodies, and be it independent music or Bollywood, they have created a mark in both. Recently, the composer duo sat with ETimes for a candid conversation, wherein they spoke on different topics.

Excerpts from the interview are below:

You have perfectly created a balance between independent tracks and Bollywood tracks; was it a conscious decision?

"Yes, it's very important that we never differentiate between an independent track and a Bollywood song because we think that song is a song. We can take a song lightly depending on whether it will be an independent or Bollywood track. We make sure to create a larger than life impact for both. Thus, the kind of sound we are exploring in independent songs is as big as a filmy track. Right from instrumentation, to song production to singers, we make sure to treat an independent track exactly like a Bollywood song."

Tell us a bit about your journey

We both belong to Kirana Gharana of Jaipur and our grandfather was Padmashri Ustad Faiyaz Ahmed Sahaab. So music runs in our blood and it was a musical journey from childhood itself. We both compose together for films and independent projects. Our Bollywood journey started in 2015 when Abbas Mustan sir gave us a break in ‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karu’, that was our debut and then there was no looking back. We did ‘Meri Waali Ding Dang’ from ‘Munna Micheal’, then we did ‘Pal’ from ‘Jalebi’ and then we did ‘Teri Bhabhi’ from ‘Coolie No. 1’ and our last hit was ‘Kabhi Tumhhe’ from ‘Shershaah’. We have explored many different genres of music and it was good.

Independent music space has created a lot of waves in the last few years, what would you say about the same?

We agree in the past few years independent music has picked pace. To an extent, the lockdown has been one of the reasons behind the same. During the lockdown, not many movies were released, and the ones that were in making were put on hold. This gave independent artists the opportunity and platform to showcase their talent. Many musicians took great advantage of this opportunity and were able to release beautiful melodies. Also, we would like to add that this trend of independent music will go a long way.

When a song is recreated, comparisons tend to happen; what's the reaction you have got so far for the ‘Nikamma’ title track?

"The comparison between a recreated song and an original track is inevitable. However, the reactions that we have been getting for ‘Nikamma’ are very nice. We have recreated it in a different way. It isn’t a carbon copy of the original, we have just taken the hook line of Himesh Reshammiya sir's popular track 'Nikamma' and apart from that entirely we have created something different. From the sound to the graph to the melody, everything is different. We have just taken the hook line melody from Himesh sir's track and the rest of the melody is different. And with a new beat and energetic groove, you can call it a club banger. The song has a new theme and we have got new singers as well."
