Indeed, Sadhu Kokila's first-ever project as a keyboard player came along in 1987 with the film 'Ondu Muttina Kathe', a Shankar Nag directorial. His tryst with films too, apparently, has a Shankar Nag angle as he would foray into film music when Nag sought out Kannada musicians for his very ambitious Sanketh Studio. Having worked with the maestro L. Vaidyanathan on 'Ondu Muttina Kathe', Sadhu Kokila would go on to feature as a rhythm player in 'Malgudi Days' (

composed by L. Vaidyanathan).

Born into a family of musicians, Sadhu Kokila began his musical journey as part of Kasturi Shankar's orchestra which also featured Kokila's brother at the time. It was here that he would avidly practice the keyboard and set his eyes on a career as a music composer and soon, indeed, opportunities would come calling. Post his session-music days, Sadhu Kokila was able to work alongside Upendra who not only gave him his first big break but also encouraged him to act. Born as Sahaya Sheelan Shadrach, Sadhu Kokila was given his iconic screen name by Upendra.
