2023 in review: A roundup of the Kannada film industry

As we bid farewell to another year, let's take a moment to reflect on the highlights, controversies, and significant events that shaped the Kannada film industry in 2023.

Several films made significant strides at the box office. Kabzaa emerged as a juggernaut, raking in a staggering ₹35.04 Cr domestically and ₹48 Cr worldwide. Other notable mentions include Sapta Sagaradaache Ello with ₹12.80 Cr, Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare earning ₹6.46 Cr, Kousalya Supraja Rama accumulating ₹2.27 Cr, and Tagaru Palya and Gurudev Hoysala fetching ₹2.13 Cr and ₹2 Cr respectively according to a report by cinefry.com.

The Kannada film scene witnessed fresh directorial talent. Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy's 'Aachar & Co.' stood out, offering a unique narrative. Nithin Krishnamurthy’s ‘Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare’ also found a place in the hearts of the fans with its dark comedy-drama set in a boy's hostel. Additionally, Shashank Soghal's 'Daredevil Mustafa' spotlighted budding actors through an innovative crowdfunding approach.

The year was filled with joyous marriage announcements. Notable marriages included Kannada actors Harshika Poonacha with Bhuvann Ponnannaa, Abishek (son of Ambareesh and Sumalatha) marrying Aviva Bidappa, and Pooja Gandhi tying the knot with Vijay Ghorpade.

The industry wasn't without its share of controversies. Nagabhushana faced severe backlash following a tragic accident resulting in a fatality earlier in the year. Similarly, Darshan Thoogudeepa and his spouse landed in legal conflict over wildlife protection violations and alleged dog attacks. Kichcha Sudeep faced a defamation suit from producer MN Kumar, while Divya Spandana took legal action against the team of 'Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare' for unauthorized promotional material usage. Additionally, actor Upendra's controversial remarks about Dalits during a Facebook Live session stirred controversy, leading to an apology. Furthermore, Bigg Boss Kannada contestant Varthur Santhosh faced legal consequences over a tiger claw pendant controversy.
