Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade is adding creativity to his spiritual quest with a cameo – a special role in the multilingual Veera Kambala, also being released in Tulu. The movie, based on the traditional Kambala race, marks the return of Rajendra Singh Babu to direction after a long hiatus.
Rajendra Singh says, “Veerendra Heggade has shot for his cameo which is very crucial in the climax. When Kambala races were held in a bygone era in two separated fields, there would be ties, leading to quarrels. So, a respected person would decide the winner, which is played by Veerendra Heggade. We have completed shooting for the movie, slated for an April release.”

“Kambala’s 500-year history has remained unexplored in Kannada cinema. I have worked on the script based on my research. It is an integral part of Tulu culture, and the religious beliefs associated with the race and its preparations will be celebrated in the film,” elaborates the director.
The Dharmasthala priest had earlier appeared in the television show Weekend with Ramesh. To prep for this role, he also watched Kantara in Mangaluru with family, sources claim.
