The students of the Government Film & TV Institute have been fighting for over two months, demanding a better course with an updated syllabus and up-to-date equipment. Students' Council president
Agin Basanth
has led this protest and had gathered support from some top film minds like
Girish Kasaravalli. The
Department of Technical Education
(
DTE), which had promised to look into the matter, doesn't seem to have given the students what they wished for, dismissing the plea for the upgradation of the campus. In fact, professor
Ravikiran
of the cinematography department has even submitted an estimate of the requirements, along with request letters asking for the same. These, too, don't seem to have yielded any result.
Agin, says, 'In April, the DTE commitee had conducted two enquiries based on our demands, but none of that seems to have been forwarded to higher authorities. The enquiry commision from the DTE has failed to understand that our fight is for us to learn filmmaking in the right sense. We have, since, met Minister of Law, TB Jayachandra, and requested that an enquiry committee be formed under the leadership of Girish Kasaravalli and other filmmakers, as only filmmakers can analyze this issue. But our request was refused. The government instead ordered yet another enquiry commision from the DTE. Our fight is now for an independent committee under Girish Kasaravalli, and not people who have no knowledge of filmmaking or our aspirations.'
