Innovation, hygiene makes namma street food cool: Prabhu Mundkur
Love street food? So does actor Prabhu Mundkur. “I love how much the concept of street food has changed over time,” says Prabhu, who joins us to explore the food trail in HSR Layout.
‘I WAS INITIALLY NOT A FAN OF STREET FOOD’ I grew up in Udupi, and I was never really exposed to street food. Especially since, as kids, we were told it wasn’t healthy or clean and that it would make us ill. The first time I tried it was when I moved to Bengaluru and I must admit that I was initially not a fan. I was concerned about the hygiene and the quality of the food being servied and that held me back from trying out new dishes. However, both the quality and hygiene have shown immense improvement ove time, and now I just can’t stop exploring.
'AFFORDABILITY COMBINED WITH CLEANLINESS, MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE'Street food was always meant to be affordable, but taking extra care to provide hyeinic yet tasty food is what takes it to the next level. Sure, it may not be the healthiest meal, but we at least know that these foods don’t have added colours or flavours in them, thanks to the norms in place.
‘THE STREET FOOD SCENE IS MODERN NOW’ The street food scene has evolved completely. Everything is so modern and customised now. It’s safe to say that it is no longer the same street food scene that we once knew of. ‘SO MANY VARIETIES, CUISINES’ Walk down any food street and it’s no longer limited to idlis, dosas, and vadas. Now, you can find myriad cuisines, be it Indian, Italian, or even Korean, all out on the street.
