Actress Anjali Anish, who recently donned the director’s hat for the first time, believes that women have a strong place in filmmaking. “Women were the shining stars at Cannes this year. It feels like we’re on the cusp of seeing even more incredible women filmmakers in the coming years, bringing fresh perspectives to storytelling. As an aspiring director, I believe, this is an exciting time to be a woman in filmmaking,” says the actress, who has directed a Kannada short film Badalaaguva Daari, which explores the journey of two people reuniting after many years.

Anjali says, “From the age of 14, I was homeschooled, which instilled in me a love for movies. This fuelled my passion for writing, which remains my first love. However, when I got into acting, the art of filmmaking completely swept me away. I even gained experience as an assistant director on films like Ambi Ning Vayassaytho and Bhaiji Superhit, which gave me the confidence to pursue directing.”
The actress says she has signed two more Kannada projects now, but she hopes to direct more projects. Ask her about her dream project and she says, “I would love to direct a lighthearted, fun film that transports audiences and lets them leave their worries behind.”
