Pushpavati made audiences recognise me: Nimika Ratnakar

Actress Nimika Ratnakar on going beyond quintessential roes, play... Read More
Still fetching notice as Pushpavati after her glamorous number in Kranti, Nimika Ratnakar is over the moon. “I’m extremely thankful for that opportunity because even though I had done films before that, it was Pushpavati that made everyone realise that somebody called Nimika Ratnakar exists in the industry,” she says. However, she is taking a detour from the glam-girl image in Om Prakash Rao’s next titled Phoenix, in which she plays the role of a domestic help.

‘It is now time for me to go beyond quintessential roles’
Yes, I’ve played the quintessential NRI girl and glam-doll roles, but now it’s time to go beyond them. When Om Prakash sir offered me this role, I asked him, ‘Sir, nimge ashtondu dhairya idiya nanna hakkondu ee cinema madakke? (Are you confident in making this film with me?) because I’m not an established name’. But sir had seen my work in Trishulam, a film which he directed with Uppi (actor Upendra) sir and me, and was confident of casting me again.
‘i became a part of something that saw me rise to my full potential’
While shooting Phoenix, which is inspired by true events, I became a part of something that saw me rise to my full potential as a woman. The Devi portion is a symbolic representation of how when evil takes over, the good automatically follows. So the day I donned this attire, we did a puja on set and I remember how everyone was stunned with the final turnout. I was equally moved too.
‘Audience has moved away from typical mass movie format’
Even in masala films, movie buffs want substance. So as actors, even though we get offered many films, we like to wait it out and choose the right film, which I think is more important if you want to prove yourself.
