Raghu Shastry on his all-time favourite directors
Sandalwood
Putanna Kanagal: He is one of the legends of our Sandalwood industry. I grew up watching his movies. I like his movie Ranganyaki and Masanada Hoovu which influenced me a lot. He touched on topics which were considered social taboos during that time. The movie showed Ambareesh as a perfect actor.
Shankar Nag: His film Accident had a tremendous impact on me. It showcased the current day politics, pub culture and nepotism which holds relevance for many more years to come. Shankar Nag’s other movies
Mani Ratnam: He is an inspiration to all directors. His film Kannathil Muthamittal, which takes place in Sri Lanka, shows how a girl goes in search of her mother and is one of my all-time favourite films. There is a lot to learn from his movies on the technical front.
Anurag Kashyap: I had the opportunity to work with him as an assistant. At a time when other directors had confined themselves to portray movies colourfully, Anurag changed the way directors think by directing movies like Ugly. Even the subjects he selects are quite different.
Sriram Raghavan: He is known to direct thriller movies. He always outsmarts audiences. Sriram's film keep audiences on the edge of seats. His writing process and screenplay are mind blowing.
