Most popular filmi remakes: Part 2

They say the best films are universal. This means that the story resonates with audiences no matter which language they are in. And that's why several filmmakers have decided to take the remake route with films that have worked well in other regional film industries. We take a look at some more of the most popular remakes in Sandalwood. BRINDAVANA: The 2010 Telugu comedy Brindavanam, which starred NT Rama Rao, Kajal Aggarwal and Samantha, was a massive hit. So it came as no surprise when several remakes of the film were made -- in Odia, Bengali and in Marathi. It was so popular that it was remade in Bangadesh. The Kannada remake, Brindavana, was remade with Challenging Star Darshan and Karthika Nair in the lead roles. The Sandalwood version released in 2013 and was a massive hit.

MAANIKYA: The 2013 Telugu film Mirchi, starring Prabhas and Anushka Shetty, was a massive hit, so much so that it inspired remakes in two other regional film industries -- Bengali and Kannada. The Sandalwood version was highly anticipated as it brought power actors Sudeep and V Ravichandaran together on the big screen for the first time. The action-drama released in 2014, and was considered one of the blockbusters of that year. It even managed to cross the 100-day mark in theatres. Maanikya also earned the distinction of being the first Kannada film to be screened at the Indian Film Festival of Ireland.

SHARAN ADHYAKSHA: Although Telugu movies have been popular as Sandalwood remakes, there are Tamil films that are picked up for Kannada remakes as well. Case in point: the 2013 Kollywood romantic comedy Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam. The film was released in 2014 in Kannada with popular comedian Sharan in the lead, and was therefore titled Sharan Adhyaksha. Although the original Tamil film received mixed reviews from critics, its Kannada remake was a hit.

POWER ***: Mahesh Babu films aren't new to being remade. So when his 2011 film Dookudu released and went on to became a hit, it wasn't long before it was remade in Bengali and Kannada. In fact, the Kannada remake generated buzz because it starred Puneeth Rajkumar, also known as the Power Star of Kannada cinema -- which is why the film was titled Power *** (2014). There was also a lot of buzz surrounding the fact that this was Tamil actress Trisha's first Sandalwood film. And yes, the film lived up to the hype and was a commercial and critical success.

PORKI: This is another example of a Mahesh Babu film that was remade in Kannada. The original, Pokkiri (2006), was a massive commercial success and was remade four years later in Kannada. The film starred Challenging Star Darshan, and it was expected that the film would do well owing to his mass image. The movie also starred Pranitha Subhash as the female lead. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it ran for 100 days at the box office.
