Mohanlal’s 'L2: Empuraan', directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, hit theatres on March 27 to an overwhelming response. The film stormed the box office on its opening day, setting new records. However, collections saw a dip on its second day, according to box office reports.
As per Sacnilk, early reports suggest that the movie is expected to earn Rs 11.75 crore on the second day. The film has reportedly earned a total of Rs 33.25 crore in two days. On Thursday, 'L2: Empuraan' recorded earnings of Rs 21.5 crore.
The report further highlights that the movie witnessed an overall Malayalam occupancy of 45.35 per cent as of Friday (March 28), while the Hindi version recorded a much lower occupancy at 4.69 per cent. With the weekend approaching, all eyes are on whether the film can regain momentum at the box office. A significant challenge lies ahead, as Salman Khan’s highly anticipated Sikandar is set to release nationwide on March 30, intensifying competition.
Serving as the second part of an ambitious trilogy, 'L2: Empuraan' follows the blockbuster success of Lucifer (2019). The film boasts a stellar cast, featuring Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Indrajith Sukumaran, and Manju Warrier.
ETimes has rated the film 3.5 out of 5, stating in its review: “Unfortunately, the pace dips in the second half, where the politics in Kerala could have been truly engaging and fun. Jathin has made some unholy alliances over a dangerous dam situation in Nedumpally. Will Priyadarshini have the gumption to preserve a legacy that held the state together? Will Nedumpally return? Will his Khureshi avatar keep an old promise to Zayed to avenge his family? Even this latter bit doesn’t get us excited, despite the backstory being well-told and emotionally engaging. Of course, anticipation is sky-high for the movie, and it delivers to some extent but fails to capture the novelty, punch, and star power that Lucifer offered. Mohanlal’s dialogues and characterisation were iconic and full of shocks and surprises in the previous film. That cult stunt sequence, where he pins a policeman to the wall while his hands are cuffed, is repeated here with double the effect—Khureshi and Zayed tackle the bad guys together—but even that doesn’t quite deliver the same thrills.”
