66th National Film Awards

. He received the honour from Vice President Venkaiah Naidu at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. The actor received a special mention in Feature Film Section for his convincing portrayal of an inspector who sheds light on organ racket in Malayalam film 'Joseph'. For the special occasion, Joju was dressed in his favourite outfit, a white mundu and black shirt.

'Joseph' was a crucial movie in Joju's career, who has been in the acting business since the past 22 years. This film marked Joju’s first as a lead and his jaw-dropping performance was the real highlight. Directed by M Padmakumar, the film won applause for its intense investigative thriller elements.

Savithri Sreedharan also received a special mention for her performance in 'Sudani from Nigeria', it bagged the honour for the best film in Malayalam. However marking a protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, the whole team of 'Sudani from Nigeria' including Savithri Sreedharan boycotted the event. Late MJ Radhakrishnan was honoured with Best Cinematography award for 'Olu'. Vignesh Bangalan bagged the Best Production Design Award for Dileep starrer 'Kammara Sambhavam'.
