Actress who vanished after starring with Mohanlal and Nagarjuna; lost Aamir Khan film; later stopped watching Indian films
Some actors blaze like a star in cinema, but later they tragically have a short life in the spotlight. The actress at the center of this story is one such star, whose early rise promised a legendary career before fate pulled her away for nearly three decades. She has even acted alongside Mohanlal and Nagarjuna. She is none other than Girija Shettar.
Her entry into films was nothing short of explosive. Girija made her debut opposite Nagarjuna in Mani Ratnam’s 1989 romantic masterpiece 'Geethanjali.' The film ran for over 100 days and redefined the Telugu romantic genre. The movie turned Girija into a sensation almost overnight.
Her lively, modern, free-spirited performance became a benchmark for heroine portrayals of that era. Critics celebrated her for embodying “a signifier of good modernity,” a line that found its place in the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema.
Girija soon became a favorite in Malayalam as well, starring opposite Mohanlal in Priyadarshan’s hit 'Vandanam.' Who can forget the iconic scene "Enkile ennod para I love you enn..."
An Aamir Khan film slips away, followed by more setbacks
Girija's next big leap was supposed to be Bollywood. She was cast opposite Aamir Khan in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, a film destined for cult status. But after the first schedule, personal circumstances forced her to leave for London. Earlier, in a chat with Indian Express, director Mansoor Khan revealed that he had to scrap most of the cast, bringing in Ayesha Jhulka as the replacement lead.
Only a fleeting appearance in the song 'Arre Yaaro' remains as a ghost of the career she might have had.
At the same time, her Malayalam film 'Dhanushkodi,' co-starring Mohanlal, collapsed mid-production due to financial problems. What began as a remarkable ascent suddenly spiraled into uncertainty.
Walking away from cinema—and watching it from afar
Disheartened and overwhelmed, she left India entirely. In an interview, Girija admitted to avoiding Indian films for years, fearing they would reignite regrets.
Her second Telugu film, 'Hrudayanjali,' released only in 2002, long after she had stepped out of the industry.
A quiet comeback
Girija returned in 2024 with the Kannada film 'Ibbani Tabbida Ileyali.' The movie marked a gentle re-entry into the world of cinema.
