Bharath Gopy honoured as National Film Archive of India's 'face of the week'

The National Film Archives of India (NFAI) is honouring the versatile portrayals of actor Bharath Gopi by making him the ‘

face of the week

’. And in typical style, it has picked out the intense, but also erudite roles, that show the eclectic range of the three time National Award winner: Best Actor for Koodiyettom, Best Film on Other Social Issues for his directorial Yamanam and Best Book on Cinema for Abhinayam Anubhavam.

Here are the films picked out by the NFAI to pay tribute to the late actor:

Swayamwaram: His debut film had him play the minor role of an unemployed youth, but the actor would go on to win his National Award for his role in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s next, Kodiyettam.

Thampu: Bharath Gopi played the role of circus manager in G Aravindan’s 1978 film Thampu. A poetic quasi-documentary chronicles three days with a circus in a small town of Kerala. The film won the National Award for Best Director.

Satah Se Uthata Admi: This is a little trivia gem. Who remembers that Bharath Gopi also did a role in Mani Kaul’s 1980 Hindi film, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. The film revolves around three characters Ramesh, Madhav and Keshav, played by BharathGopi, Vibhuti Jha and MK Raina.

Kattathe Kilikoodu: A family drama directed by Bharathan, the 1983 movie, is about how fear and jealousy of a young college student destroys the family life of a college professor played by Gopi. The film again earned him the State Award for Best Actor.

Chidambaram: G Aravindan’s masterpiece about man-woman relationships and morality won the National Award for Best Film in 1985 and Bharath Gopi the State Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of mild mannered estate manager Sankaran.
