Jayaram to Rahman: Meet the Malayalam cast in Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan: 1'

Mastercraft filmmaker Mani Ratnam who has delivered several classic visually striking films is all set for his most ambitious outing ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’. From the superstar Vikram to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Mani Ratnam’s epic drama has a casting coup of sorts. Apart from being a Mani Ratnam film, the anticipation level among the Malayali audience is really high due to the fact that the epic drama is stacked with several Malayalam actors such as Jayaram, Rahman, Riyaz Khan, and many others. Here let’s take a look at the Malayalam cast of Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ aka ‘PS-1’.

Versatile Mollywood actor Jayaram will be seen playing a pivotal role in Mani Ratnam’s epic drama. According to the reports, Jayaram will be essaying the role of Azhwarkadiyan Nambi aka Thirumalaiappan in ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’. Thirumalaiappan is a Vaishnavite spy who works for the prime minister and Sembriyan Mahadevi ( Wife of Gandaraditya and the mother of Utthama Chola). Looking at the terrific character-building style of Mani Ratnam, it can be expected that the character Thirumalaiappan will give ample space for Jayaram to unveil his acting potential.

Malayalam actress Aiswarya Lekshmi is certainly going places as she played prominent roles in several Telugu and Tamil films. Now the actor is roped in for Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ to play a significant character named Poonguzhali aka Samuthirakumari who is a boat woman living in Kodikarai. The English meaning for Samuthirakumari is ‘The princess of the ocean’.

Malayalam actor Lal plays a pivotal role in ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ as the character named Tirukoilur Malaiyaman aka Milaadudaiyar who is the father-in-law of Sundara Chola and is also the maternal grandfather of his kids. Lal has also played several memorable roles in Tamil films such as ‘Porkkalam’, ‘Kutti Puli’, ‘Chandi Veeran’, and ‘Antony’. Lal will be also seen essaying a historical character figure in the upcoming Nivin Pauly starrer ‘Mahaveeryar’

Riyaz Khan is certainly one of the underrated actors in Mollywood. With his perfect physique and looks, Riyaz Khan has played antagonist characters in several Malayalam, Tamil, and even Bollywood movies. Now the actor is roped in for Mani Ratnam’s epic drama and he will be seen essaying the role of Soman Sambhavan who is one of the members of Pandya Aabathudavigal.

Mollywood actor Rahman who has been the heartthrob of the Malayali audience in the 90s has been slowly pacing away from the limelight as he took to playing several sidekick characters in movies. Now, after the super hit Tamil film ‘Dhruruvangal Pathinaaru’, Rahman is all set to make his most ambitious outing ever with Mani Ratnam’s epic drama. Rahman will be playing Sembiyan Mahadevi’s son character named Madurantaka Uttama Chola in ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’. The actor, while unveiling the motion poster for ‘PS-1’, penned a note on his Instagram handle saying that he felt grateful to be part of such an epic movie.

Mollywood action star Babu Antony will be stepping into the shoes of Rashtrakuta king in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: 1’. Apart from ‘PS -1’, Babu Antony also has another highly ambitious project with the Mollywood director Omar Lulu, named ‘Power Star’. Babu Antony is said to be appearing in his vintage action hero avatar with Omar Lulu’s directorial action entertainer which is scripted by the late writer Dennis Joseph.
