‘Kaduva’ to ‘Kasaba’: Malayalam movie scenes that sparked controversy

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan once said in an interview with an online media channel that every film’s sole purpose is to kickstart a debate among the viewers where they contemplate everything that is right and wrong in it. Likewise, there are several movies that land into controversies from the announcement of its title to its content that certain communities may find derogatory. Here let’s take a look at those movie scenes in Malayalam movies that sparked controversy.

‘Kaduva’

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s action entertainer ‘Kaduva’ already stepped into controversy since the announcement of the project itself. Finally, as the film is finally out in the theatres, the audience pointed out that a certain sequence in the movie is derogatory to specially-abled kids and their parents. Prithviraj Sukumaran and the director Shaji Kailas penned an apology note via their official social media handles saying that they were unaware of the fact that the scene would hurt the feelings of specially-abled kids and their parents. Now the makers have decided to remove that particular sequence from the movie and the new version of ‘Kaduva’ will be out in the theaters soon.

‘Kasaba’

Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu lashed out at the makers of Mammootty starrer ‘Kasaba’ for the inclusion of a particular scene that is indeed degrading women and their values. In the controversial sequence, Mammootty’s police character in the movie is seen making sexually explicit remarks to a lady officer. Parvathy also criticized the actor for performing such a sequence which is indeed glorified with the use of a heavy background score. Parvathy’s social media was flooded with hate comments from fans who were all asking for her to apologize for her behaviour against such a senior actor. Parvathy stood firm on her statement. Recently Parvathy reportedly said that she never attacked Mammootty over ‘Kasaba’ and also said that they are both on good terms now.

‘Biriyani’

Sajin Baabu’s directorial film ‘Biriyani’ had several adult sequences and for the same reason, the film was rated as ‘adults only’ by the Censor Board. Several theatre owners refused to screen the movie claiming that the film had several adult scenes and is not morally correct for the viewers. One of the lead actors in the movie said that certain people were trying to defame him by taking out those explicit scenes from the movie and circulating that specific portion on social media. The film was later released on OTT and received positive responses too.

‘Action Hero Biju’

Nivin Pauly’s realistic cop-drama ‘Action Hero Biju’ also landed into controversy for a particular scene in the movie that netizens claimed to be racist. Nivin Pauly’s police character Biju makes fun of an autorickshaw driver for loving a dark-skinned, oversized woman. Nivin Pauly’s character also passed the dialogue, “How can you possibly love such a thing?.” Although the film directed by Abrid Shine was a humongous hit, this particular scene irked the viewers. Apart from Nivin Pauly, the film also had the actors Anu Emmanuel, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Joju George, and Major Ravi in significant roles.
