Kerala actress assault case: Court awards 20-year sentence to the accused, equal punishment debate intensifies
The Ernakulam Special Court recently sentenced six people convicted in the 2017 actress kidnapping and sexual assault case to stiff sentences.
They were all given the minimum sentence of 20 years in prison for the crime of gang rape, and a fine of Rs. 50,000 was imposed on each of them. The idea that the maximum sentence should be imposed was also widely presented in court, given the heinous nature of the crime. However, the court's decision to impose the minimum sentence prescribed by law could send a wrong message to society, it said, as reported by India Today.

Court debates whether equal sentencing applies to all involved
Before the sentencing, all six convicts explained their circumstances and requested leniency in their sentences. The first convict, Pulsar Sunil, cited his elderly mother as the reason. The second and sixth convicts spoke tearfully in court, citing family issues. Following this, the court also raised the question of whether everyone should be given the same sentence; because even though there was one person who directly committed the crime, everyone was involved in a collective crime. The lawyers insisted that “equal punishment for everyone under the law is necessary.”Judge urges caution in public commentary
Due to the controversy surrounding this case, the court emphasized that anyone should only comment after reading the judgment in full. The court also raised the question of whether punishment should be determined based on social expectations or based solely on the principles of law. Meanwhile, it has been announced that the contempt cases related to this case will be taken up for hearing on December 18.Dileep’s acquittal remains a point of debate
In parallel, it is recalled that actor Dileep was acquitted on December 8 due to insufficient evidence in the conspiracy charges against him. The case of the actress being kidnapped and raped on February 17, 2017, has long been a hotly debated case in Kerala and Indian cinema. The severe sentence now handed down by the court to all six convicts is considered a major milestone in the long judicial journey of this case.Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and is based on reported news of court proceedings and legal claims.
