Kerala State Chalachitra Academy issue: Minister Saji Cherian to intervene post-December 23

Tensions grip the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy as conflicting opinions and discord between key members prompt State Minister of Culture and Films, Saji Cherian, to announce an intervention post-December 23, aiming to resolve the brewing crisis.

Minister Cherian addressed the escalating issues within the Academy, citing them as personal conflicts that haven't yet hindered the institution's functionality. "There are certain issues that are personal in nature and have not impacted the Academy's operations. We will engage with the involved parties separately to address these concerns," stated Cherian.


The recent turmoil stemmed from the resignation of acclaimed filmmaker Biju from the directorial post at the Kerala State Film Development Corporation. This move came in response to the remarks made by the director Renjith, the Academy chairman and filmmaker, concerning Biju's film screened at the 28th International Film Festival of Kerala, which concluded on Friday, December 16.

The discord was amplified when nine out of the 15 council members publicly criticized Renjith and demanded his resignation, citing the need for corrective action or stepping down from his chairman's position.

Renjith defended his stance, categorizing his remarks as personal opinions shared with the media at his residence, refusing to accede to the demand for resignation.

Amidst the discord, support emerged for Renjith from a popular party state secretary M.V. Govindan, who downplayed the controversy, lauding Renjith's efforts in successfully organizing the IFFK.
