This year due to the pandemic, there were rumours that the government may suspend announcing the Kerala State Film Awards. However, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman Kamal confirmed that the processes to select the award winners have begun.
“Cultural Minister AK Balan has directed us to take adequate measures for jury members to watch the movies in Thiruvananthapuram, following all the Covid-19 protocols,” Kamal says, adding that they have started the procedures.
Madhu Ambat, who heads the jury this year, is now in Thiruvananthapuram and in self-quarantine. The ace cinematographer tells us that the screening of the films will begin by the end of the month. “The awards will be given to those who deserve and I will strive for that. My judgment will be fair and unbiased,” he says.
Recently, three jury members – writer TD Ramakrishnan, musician PJ Berny and actress Archana – were replaced by singer Lathika, actress Jomol and writer Benyamin. A few filmmakers had apprehensions about the resignation of these members. One among those filmmakers says, “They were suggested by director
Shaji N Karun and former secretary Mahesh Panchu. I guess they opted for those they prefer to replace them.”
TD Ramakrishnan, meanwhile, says that there was no ulterior motive. “I have undergone two surgeries and I need to take care of my health. At this time, my doctors aren’t sure if I should be in a hotel room for so many days. I really do not want to take any risk. There is no other reason for my resignation,” he says.
A source related to the Chalachitra Academy reveals that the initial screening of the films might be arranged in the jury members’ rooms. “Screening will be held individually. Madhu Ambat and film editor L Bhoominathan will definitely be watching the movies in their rooms,” he says.
