'KGF' to 'Baahubali' - Films that have a good fan base among the Malayali audience

The renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli once said during the promotional event of his magnum opus ‘RRR’ that the Malayali audience have literally opened doors for him and his films ‘Baahubali’, ‘Magadheera’, and ‘Eega’. One can agree with what the ‘RRR’ director said, as the Malayali audience has always welcomed other language films that have good content or have some elements that the Malayalam films themselves lack. Not only Rajamouli’s films but there are also several other foreign language movies that have genuinely created a fan base among the Malayali audience. Here let's take a look at some of those films.

KGF

Prashanth Neel’s directorial film ‘KGF: Chapter 1’ was a surprise entry into the hearts of every Malayali audience as there was no big hype for the movie or the actor Yash before the film's release. After the release, the film got much hype among the Kerala audience due to mouth publicity, and also the film had several goosebumps and mass elements that were really lacking in the majority of the Malayalam movies that were released during that time. Now that the second part of the film is set to be released, the expectation for this Yash starrer action thriller is much higher among the audience.

Baahubali

By the time the renowned director SS Rajamouli reached the film ‘Baahubali’, the ace filmmaker had already created a huge fan base among the Malayali audience through his previous films ‘Magadheera’, and ‘Eega’. With the entry of ‘Baahubali’ franchise the actor Prabhas earned wide recognition among Keralites. Thanks to the flawless dubbing of the film that really did justice to the strong and emotional dialogues in the film.

Enthiran

With the Vikram starrer ‘Anniyan’, the renowned filmmaker Shankar has already proved that he is a master at delivering films with high technical quality that comes on par with any Hollywood film. The 2010 Rajinikanth starrer ‘Enthiran’ also had the Malayalam actors Kalabhavan Mani and Cochin Haneefa which actually added to the relatability factor for the Malayali audience towards the film. ‘Enthiran’ showcased a VFX extravaganza that the audience has never before experienced and the film was a humongous hit in Kerala.

Dhoom

The Bollywood superhit movie series ‘Dhoom’ doesn't need an introduction among the Malayali audience. The film which was released in 2004 showcased several action sequences and moments that the audience had only witnessed before in Hollywood films. During the time when ‘Dhoom’ was released, the majority of the shops in Kerala sold a kind of musical mobile phone toy that produced the sound of iconic ‘Dhoom’ theme music when it was turned on and this toy proudly serves as one of the nostalgic elements for each and every Malayali. This shows how popular the film was in Kerala.

Don

The Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is indeed famous for unveiling his romantic boy charm through several romantic drama films. But what created a huge fan base in Kerala is when SRK turned into an antagonist for Farhan Akhtar’s directorial film ‘Don’ which was released in the year 2006. The film still has a huge fanbase in Kerala and the sequel to ‘Don’ was also a humongous hit in the ‘God’s Own Country’.
