Leena Maria Paul denied bail in Rs 200 crore scam case by SC; cites health issues - actress faces setback

Actress and model Leena Maria Paul has faced a legal blow as the Supreme Court dismissed her bail plea in the Rs 200 crore financial fraud case tied to notorious conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar. Leena, who is a co-accused in the case, sought bail on health grounds, claiming she has been suffering from tuberculosis and has been imprisoned for over three and a half years.


According to Asianet News, the Supreme Court, however, refused to intervene at this stage, citing that her bail application is already under consideration by the Delhi High Court. The bench noted that it would be inappropriate to entertain her plea while the matter is still pending before the lower court. The court directed her to approach them again, if necessary, after the High Court delivers its verdict.




Supreme Court urges quick hearing in HC


According to the reports, while rejecting Leena’s request, the Supreme Court acknowledged the delay in the High Court’s decision-making process and urged the latter to expedite the hearing. Leena had argued that her prolonged custody, coupled with her deteriorating health, warranted immediate relief. However, the court emphasized procedural discipline and instructed her to wait for the outcome of the ongoing High Court proceedings.

The actress had highlighted that she has been in judicial custody since 2021 and is suffering from a chronic illness, which she believes should be considered a valid ground for bail. Despite these arguments, the top court remained firm on not bypassing the due process already in motion.

For the unversed, Leena Maria Paul was arrested in connection with a sensational fraud case in which Sukesh Chandrasekhar and his team allegedly extorted Rs 200 crore from Aditi Singh, the wife of Shivinder Singh—former promoter of Fortis Healthcare. The con involved promises to secure bail for Shivinder and his brother Malvinder Mohan Singh, both of whom are in jail on separate financial crime charges.
