The Malayalam film industry mourns the loss of renowned producer Gandhimathi Balan, who breathed his last at the age of 65 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

Gandhimathi Balan's demise marks the end of an era in Malayalam cinema, as he leaves behind a rich legacy of over 30 movies, showcasing his significant contributions to the industry.


Gandhimathi Balan's illustrious career commenced with the production of 'Ithiri Neram Othiri Karyam,' which marked his entry into the world of filmmaking. Collaborating with acclaimed director K G George on notable productions like 'Panchavadi Palam,' he swiftly established himself as a respected figure in the Malayalam film industry.

Notably, his collaboration with the legendary director Padmarajan resulted in the creation of several classic Malayalam movies. However, following Padmarajan's untimely demise, Balan gradually withdrew from active filmmaking involvement.

Gandhimathi Balan's filmography boasts an array of Malayalam classics, including 'Pathamudayam,' 'Sukhamo Devi,' 'Nombarathipoovu,' and 'Moonnam Pakkam,' among others.

His final production venture, the 1990 Mammootty starrer 'Ee Thanutha Veluppan Kalathu,' is undoubtedly one of the best thrillers ever made in Mollywood. Directed by the veteran Joshiy, ‘Ee Thanutha Veluppan Kalathu’ has Mammootty in the lead role as the character SP Haridas Damodaran IPS. The script was penned by P. Padmarajan.
