Mammootty’s ‘Bramayugam’ used as case study in UK film school; Director reacts

Mammootty’s critically acclaimed horror film ‘Bramayugam’ continues to make waves internationally. A recent video showing the 2024 horror drama used as a case study for sound design at the University of Creative Arts in the United Kingdom has gone viral on social media.


Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, ‘Bramayugam’ was one of the most celebrated Malayalam films of 2024. The black-and-white period folk horror film, which blended myth, folklore, and sacred mysteries of Kerala, received widespread acclaim for its atmospheric storytelling, eerie visuals, and immersive sound design.


Now, a student from the University of Creative Arts shared a video on Instagram, revealing that Bramayugam is being studied as part of the curriculum for sound design. The video caught the attention of director Rahul Sadasivan, who later shared it as a story on his official Instagram handle. The video was shared with the caption, “Bramayugam at a film school in London.”

Earlier in an exclusive interview with ETimes, the director Rahul Sadasivan said, “The idea was to tell this story in a unique way; however, it's not a paranormal plot like my previous one. This has a different kind of horror.it was challenging. But there was never a thought of telling this story in a colour format. I felt the decision to shoot in black-and-white itself was an enlightenment because everyone seems to be excited about it now! I pitched this film with the cast and crew to shoot it in black-and-white. This is a black-and-white film, and I can’t see it in colour.”

‘Bramayugam’ featured Mammootty in a chilling lead role, supported by Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan. The film’s use of sound to create an unsettling atmosphere was widely praised, making it a fitting choice for academic discussion.
