Tharun Moorthy’s upcoming film ‘Thudarum,’ starring Mohanlal and Shobana, is already making waves at the box office, even before its release.
Impressive pre-sales with low hypeDespite relatively low buzz surrounding the film, its Kerala pre-sales have crossed an impressive Rs 1.5 crore from 1071 shows, with over 87,000 tickets sold, according to industry tracker Friday Matinee.
Story of a taxi driverThis figure is significant considering the film hasn’t had an aggressive promotional campaign or wide media coverage like Mohanlal’s previous film, ‘L2: Empuraan.’ The strong pre-release performance points to the continued pulling power of Mohanlal, who plays the role of Shanmugham — a humble taxi driver whose life takes a dramatic turn when he is pulled into legal and bureaucratic entanglements. Shobana appears in a pivotal role, marking an exciting reunion on screen for the iconic duo.
Tharun Moorthy’s concernIn a recent interview with The Cue, director Tharun Moorthy expressed concern over how the film is being perceived by audiences ahead of its release. “When we are doing a film with a brand like Mohanlal, we should obviously expect good hype,” he said. “But what I am worried about is that we have already fixed a genre for the movie. This comes under family drama.”
Tharun Moorthy, known for his socially grounded narratives, clarified that ‘Thudarum’ is not a mystery thriller or investigative drama, as some are speculating. “When we define a genre and make a movie accordingly, if anything comes beyond that, I cannot accept it—that’s my nature,” he added, admitting that such reactions may stem from his limited experience.
Set to release on April 25, 2025, ‘Thudarum’ promises to offer a grounded, emotional narrative.
