Popular Tamil actor and DMDK founder Vijayakanth passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023, in Chennai. He was 71. The veteran was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai for pneumonia. He was on ventilator support due to breathing difficulties after being diagnosed with COVID-19. "Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilator support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he passed away in the morning on December 28," the hospital stated.

Vijayakanth’s supporters, colleagues, and fans from across the nation are in mourning for his untimely demise. Mollywood celebrities are expressing their grief by reminiscing about the memories and experiences shared with the departed captain.

Filmmaker Shaji Kailas, who directed Vijayakanth for the 2001 film 'Vaanchinathan', expressed his deep sorrow over the veteran’s passing away. In a note shared on Instagram, Shaji Kailas said, “Demise of a true human being. From the days of Vanchinathan, Vijaykanth sir is truly a man of huge heart. Apart from being a superstar, he is a man of celebration. He was more than an actor; he was really a brilliant student of cinema. Spending each and every day at the sets of Vanchinathan with Vijaykanth sir was truly blissful. His hospitality was one of the highlights. Being a debut director in the Tamil cinema industry, he gave me a wonderful time, and he respected me as his own blood. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Let the almighty shower his family with all the blessings.”

Actor Abhirami stated that Vijayakanth’s passing is a huge loss, not just for the film industry but also for Tamil Nadu. “RIP Vijaykanth, sir. A huge loss for not just the film industry but entire Tamil Nadu. May your soul rest in peace,” she penned.


Actor Biju Menon wrote, “Goodbye, Captain."
