Veteran Malayalam music director R Somasekharan breathed his last on Monday morning, August 22 at 5.15 am at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. R Somasekharan was aged 77 at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Jayamani and children Jayasekhar, Jayasri, and Jayadev. According to the sources, the funeral rites of R Somasekharan will be held at Thycaud Shanthi Kavadam in Thiruvananthapuram on August 22, Monday evening.

R Somasekharan is the elder brother of the famous Mollywood film director Suresh Unnithan who is best known for the films ‘Utsavamelam’, ‘Sathyaprathinja’, ‘Rishyasringan’, ‘Mukha Chithram’, and ‘Ayaal’. R Somasekharan has also composed the songs for the movie ‘Ayaal’ which was directed by his younger brother.

R Somasekharan made his debut in the Malayalam music industry by composing the songs ‘Prakrithee Prabhaamayi’, and ‘Maaranicheppile’, for the movie ‘Ithum Oru Jeevitham’ and the songs were crooned by veteran musicians KJ Yesudas and S Janaki.
Later R Somasekharan worked as the music director for several movies such as ‘Aardram’, ‘Venalkkaalam’, ‘Brahmaasthram’, ‘Ayaal’, and ‘Ee Abhaya Theeram’. The song ‘Puliyilakkarayolum’ from the movie ‘Jaathakam’ gave much recognition to R Somasekharan.
Some of the most notable works of R Somasekharan includes the songs ‘Mounangal Polum’, ‘Unni Nilaavine’, ‘Poo Vidarnnappol’, ‘Mazha Peythu’, ‘Thanalmaram Illatha Bhoomi’, and ‘Velicham Mizhi Pootti’.
