‘Odiyan’ to ‘Gangster’: Big M movies that failed to live up to the sky-high hype

A film’s hype naturally soars when it boasts A-list actors in the lead and the same is the case with the majority of the films done by the Big M’s Mohanlal and Mammootty. Sadly, most of the films don't live up to the hype and turn out to be a disaster at the box office. Here, let’s take a look at some of the Big M films that failed to satisfy both the fans and critics.

‘Gangster’

The teaser for Aashiq Abu - Mammootty’s ‘Gangster’ is still considered to be one of the best ones that amped up the hype for the action entertainer. The teaser was well edited and the audiences thought the movie would be a fast-paced action entertainer with the magnificent presence of Mammootty in the lead. Unfortunately, ‘Gangster’ turned out to be a poor man’s ‘God Father’ and the majority of the audience didn't love the slow-paced storytelling and poorly written dialogue. Even the climax fight sequence didn’t satisfy the audiences as it was completely shown in a cartoon style (again poor man’s rip-off from ‘Kill Bill)

‘Kunjali Marakkar’

The epic drama movie ‘Kunjali Marakkar’ had sky-level hype among the audiences for many reasons and one being the fact that the Priyadarshan-Mohanlal combo would never disappoint the audiences. On the flip side, after the movie's release, even the fans were wondering how it bagged the best feature film award at the National Film Award 2021. Even though the movie had a top-notch making style which was never seen before in Mollywood, the audiences were not able to connect with any of the characters. Mohanlal’s hardcore fans also had to admit that the superstar was the wrong choice to portray Kunjali Marakkar on-screen.

‘Odiyan’

Sreekumar Menon’s fantasy drama movie ‘Odiyan’ is so far the best-promoted movie in Mollywood. From Mohanlal’s makeover to the movie’s theme, the movie buffs were eagerly waiting for ‘Odiyan’ magic on-screen and were left disappointed. Not only because of the poorly choreographed action sequences, but the storyline was also not quite satisfying. It can also be said that Mohanlal’s bad phase started after the release of ‘Odiyan’

‘Casanovva’

Helmed by the ace director Rosshan Andrrews and scripted by the talented writers Bobby and Sanjay, the reasons were plenty for the audiences to expect something big from the Mohanlal starrer ‘Casanovva’. Same as Kunjali Marakkar’, Mohanlal was not at all apt to play the Romeo character ‘Casanovva’ and the movie’s plot was also not satisfactory. In an interview with the media, the writers Bobby and Sanjay admitted that they have made some mistakes with ‘Casanovva’ as it went through several rewritings which affected the whole script in a bad way.
