'Spa', directed by Abrid Shine, has completed its first four days at the box office with a total worldwide collection of Rs 23 lakhs. The film has received attention due to its unconventional theme and grounded storytelling style. However its box office pace remains slow.
According to early trade estimates by the Sacnilk website the movie collected Rs 23 lakhs worldwide with Rs 20 lakhs India net and an India gross of Rs 23 lakhs.
The film’s Malayalam day-wise net collection reveals a modest start with Rs 3 lakhs on Day 1, Rs 5 lakhs on Day 2 and Rs 6 lakhs each on Day 3 and Day 4.
Slow yet steady box office trend
'Spa' is pacing slowly at the box office. The weekends did not see any major surge in ticket sales.
While the theatrical performance is mild, social media is filled with positive responses . One review noted, “Spa comes with a different story and a plot we have not seen before in Malayalam. It tries something new and talks about the different desires of men in a realistic way. As usual, Abrid Shine's making feels grounded and close to real life, which gives the movie a natural tone. The music is also not the usual kind and brings a bit of variety to the experience.”
Another detailed review highlighted the film’s bold subject. The viewer wrote, “Hats off to Abrid Shine for writing a story on a topic that is quite rarely looked upon in Malayalam in a platter of humour. The backdrop setting is same throughout but the conversation and the situations are the highlight of the movie that drives the story and keep the audience engaged.”
The same review added, “The story explores adult fantasy, sexual deprival, sexual frustrations and the silent thirst for pleasure in the society and the filmmakers has openly criticized the social stigma surrounding the idea of sensitising pleasure even in this modern century.”
Viewers believe the film may influence other filmmakers to explore bold subjects. The review concluded, “I humbly believe this will be an eye opener to many such filmmakers to come up with such brilliant subjects that is strongly discussed through a foil of humour. Kudos to Abrid Shine for the grit in pulling off a politically sensitive and rather untouched topic for the matured audience in Malayalam.”
'Spa' stands as a bold attempt in Malayalam cinema, even if the box office numbers remain modest.
