Sreenivasan passes away at 69 : Actor, director who made us laugh and think

Veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Sreenivasan passed away on Saturday, December 20, at the age of 69 as reported by Mathrubhumi. Known for his honest writing, sharp humor, and deep social thoughts, Sreenivasan was much more than a filmmaker. He was the voice of ordinary people.

Early life and entry into films

Sreenivasan made his film debut in 1976 with Manimuzhakkam, directed by P. A. Backer. His first lead role came in Sanghaganam in 1979. While studying at film school, he was enrolled by Aniyeri Prabhakaran, who later cast him in Mela in 1980.

Rise as a celebrated writer

In 1984, Sreenivasan wrote his first screenplay, Odaruthammava Aalariyam. This marked the start of a golden writing career. He went on to write iconic films like Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Nadodikkattu, Pattanapravesham, Varavelpu, Sandesam, Midhunam, Mazhayethum Munpe, Azhakiya Ravanan, Katha Parayumpol, and Njan Prakashan. Many of these films mixed humor with strong social messages.

Actor who felt real

As an actor, Sreenivasan was known for natural performances. His comedy films like Aram + Aram = Kinnaram, Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, Artham, and Chithram, often alongside actor Mukesh will always remain evergreen favorites.

A sensitive director and award winner

Sreenivasan was also a magnificent director and it was proved with Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala. Both films won major awards. They were also praised for their deep emotional and social themes. Over his career, he won multiple Kerala State Film Awards, followed by other prominent awards.


With Sreenivasan’s passing, Malayalam cinema has lost a fearless storyteller.


On the other hand, Sreenivasan was last seen in the Dhyan Sreenivasan starrer 'Aap Kaise Ho?'. He also made his comeback recently with the comedy drama film 'Kurukkan' which received decent reviews.
