Speaking about the film, which is set in Thiruvananthapuram, Hridu says, “The narrative is from the perspective of the boys. It is not based on a true story, but writer Suresh Babu has based incidents and characters on his observations of gangsters and contract goondas in Thiruvananthapuram. I hail from the city and was able to easily slip into the local slang.”

The young actor, whose previous film was Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, the Grand Prix winner at the Cannes Film Festival, points out that Mura is not just about the crimes involving gangs, but is also a story that deals with sentiments and the city. “I was able to vibe emotionally with the character and also found that I could relate the character to my friends, as well. I feel well-written characters have the power to make you reflect, and I hope to play more such roles,” says Hridhu.

Hridu plays Anandu, who is like “a lion cub, trying to protect his family and friends”. He says it was fun working with the other young actors, who formed the gang. “I have some acting experience, but the others were newbies, so I made an effort to make them comfortable, as did Musthukka. We had a good dynamics,” he says.

Hridhu says that he had watched Musthafa’s debut directorial Kapella in the theatre and enjoyed it, but “this film is going to be better”, adding that his love for cinema was nurtured by his mother and his late paternal grandmother, who used to take him along for every movie to the theatre near their house.
Mura, produced by Riya Shibu under the HR pictures banner, has music by Christy Joby. Fazil Nassar is the cinematographer and the editing is by Chaman Chakko. The film releases in theatres today.
