​Cult Classic Comedy

Sachin Pilgaonkar directorial 1988, 'Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi' is by far one of the best Marathi Comedy films till date, which has completed glorious 33 years today, (September 23). It starred Sachin Pilgaonkar, Laxmikant Berde Ashok Saraf, Sushant Ray, Nivedita Saraf, Ashvini Bhave and Priya Arun. It is now considered a cult classic comedy in Marathi cinema.

​A remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Biwi Aur Makan'

'Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi' was a remake of the 1966 Hindi film 'Biwi Aur Makan' directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It starred Biswajeet, Kalpana, Ashish Kumar, Bipin Gupta, Badri Prasad and Keshto Mukherjee in pivotal roles.

​Sachin Pilgaonkar's directorial

Despite the years that have rolled by, the film and its characters still remain household names. While speaking about his iconic comedy film, Filmmaker Sachin Pilgaonkar had told ETimes, "We are getting repeat audience every time and we see people are still watching it on the television. I think the audience made this film iconic and only they could recognize the film as an epic. The director is totally unaware of the fact that the audience has the strength to turn one film into epic"

​Remade in five languages

Sachin Pilgoankar's 'Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi' was also remade in Telugu in 1991 as 'Chitram Bhallare Vichitram', in Kannada in 2003 as 'Olu Saar Bari Olu', in Hindi in 2009 as 'Paying Guests', in Punjabi in 2014 as 'Mr & Mrs 420' and in Bengali in 2017 as 'Jio Pagla'.

​Box-office Hit

'Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi' was released under the banner of V. Shantaram Productions. The film turned out to become the highest-grossing comedy film of Sachin Pilgaonkar with Rs 3 crores in '80s.
