films have been made in Marathi although there have been some horror comedies before. So, for filmmaker

, it wasn’t an easy decision to venture into the Marathi film industry with a genre that rarely gets made in the industry. But the filmmaker was determined by real-life incidents that drove him to complete the film.

“While my interest in horror began with watching English horror films, it was Indian Paranormal Society founder Gaurav Tiwari’s death that was a trigger point to start making Kaaal,” says Sandeep. For those unaware, Gaurav founded the Indian Paranormal Society and was a pioneer in the field of scientific explanation and investigation of the paranormal in India. “Gaurav was breaking new ground in his field everyday and had given wings to many like-minded people who continue with the investigations today. However, Gaurav’s death itself was shrouded in controversy and many believe that he did under mysterious circumstances. When I read that, I thought it was about time I worked on a horror film,” adds Sandeep, who started work on

Kaaal

circa 2017, a year after Gaurav’s death.

Kaaal has been written, directed and edited by D Sandeep. It features Satish Gejage, Sanket Vishwasrao, Shreyas Behere, Rajkumar Jarange, Vaibhavi Chavan and Gayatri Chighlikar in pivotal roles. The film is about a group of youngsters who create videos about paranormal investigations and upload them online. It deals with a case they are invited to get to the bottom of.
