Stringent budgets have always restricted Marathi films from being shot abroad extensively. Exotic locales, huge budgets were never on the list of Marathi films. But all that seems to have changed as filmmakers are exploring with never-seen locations in regional films. Director Ashish Ubale has entirely shot his upcoming flick Baburao La Pakda in the fascinating city of Bangkok.
So was it the requirement of the storyline that prompted director Ubale to shoot overseas? The film is a situational comedy that revolves around the life of Baburao, a witty character played by Makrand Anaspure, who is shown to flee to Bangkok due to some inevitable circumstances. In a way the script demanded it, but that wasnt the sole reason of my shooting abroad. I also wanted an exclusive look for my film and freshness in the locations, he says.
But wasnt budget a concern as is the case with most Marathi films? Contrary to what we think, some places abroad have amiable rules as far as filming is concerned as it also generates tourism for them. Apart from a few locations we were granted permission by the government to shoot at almost all the popular as well as some unexplored spots. Most of the big budget Marathi films made today has budgets around ` 2-2.5 crores. I feel the amount is sufficient to shoot abroad if organised well. Shooting at one of the most talked about shopping destinations in the world was a treat for actor Sai Tamhankar who quips, As we locally sourced all the costumes for the shoot there, we really had fun time shopping everyday.
Apart from the fact, that Baburao La Pakda has been shot in the same bungalow used in Salman Khans Ready, the film has a lot more interesting elements to watch out for. The super comic trio Bharat Jadahv, Makrand Anaspure and
Sanjay Narvekar will be seen sharing screen space after a long time. Touted to be the first Marathi movie which is completely shot abroad, the movie also boasts of some other firsts. While comedy gem of B-wood, actor
Shakti Kapoor, will be seen unleashing his comic streak for the very first time in a Marathi movie, the film also showcases Narvekar experimenting with his vocal powers in the rap number Tu Stain Gun Hai.
