The Disciple reaches to Main Slate at New York Film Festival

58th New York Film Festival

as part of the prestigious

Main Slate

Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the

New York Film Festival

highlights the best in world cinema, and is considered the most prestigious selection of films in the US.

Since 1963, the New York Film Festival has brought new and important cinematic works from around the world and is a major platform for generating Oscar buzz as suggested by their past selections in the Main Slate of titles such as Parasite, Roma, Moonlight, Birdman and Amour.


The last Indian film to have been in the Main Slate of the New York Film Festival is Deepa Mehta’s FIRE in 1996.

Recently the film won critics' award at Venice fest. The Disciple was the only Indian film from among 16 in the competition at the prestigious festival, one of the top three in Europe. This is also the first time in 19 years that an Indian film was running for the

Golden Lion

at the fest.

Six years ago, Chaitanya Tamhane burst on to the global cinema scene with Court, one of the most acclaimed films of that year which won the National Award for best feature film and was India's official entry to the Oscars.

The film features Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Kiran Yadnyopavit, Sumitra Bhave and Deepika Bhide Bhagwat, among others. The Disciple has it's crux in the Indian classical music tradition and revolves around Sharad Nerulkar, who has devoted himself to becoming an Indian classical vocalist. Initiated into this centuries-old tradition by his father, he follows his dream. Sharad traces his way through the hallowed mysteries and rituals of past musical legends. But as the years pass, he will be forced to negotiate between the complex realities of life in contemporary Mumbai and his chosen path.
