Controversies in the first half of 2014

Case against Manasi Naik for unprofessional behaviour

The makers of the film ‘Pahili Bhet’ filed a case against actress Manasi Naik for unprofessional behaviour. The makers alleged that the actress inconvenienced them during the shoot and also behaved rudely with the unit members. The makers also said that the actress left the shoot incomplete on some scheduled days, because of which they had to incur losses. Manasi has a different story to narrate though. She told TOI, “The allegations are false. I have always been extremely adjusting on the sets. The makers have insulted me several times. In fact, on the third day of the shoot, I was not even given a vanity van. When I tried to speak to the producer, he avoided taking my calls and spoke to me through the director. I was on the verge of crying that day.” The tension between the actress and the producer was sensed by others on the sets too. Sudhir Meshram, who was the assistant director on the film, said, "There were some tensions between the actress and the producer. I don't know what happened or who was right or wrong."

Guru Thakur wasn't invited for the 'Lai Bhaari' music launch

Lyricist Guru Thakur's absence from the music launch of the film 'Lai Bhaari' had the complete industry talking about the various possibilities as to why the lyricist was not present. Guru took to a social networking website and wrote about him not being invited for the music launch of the film for which he had penned lyrics for. He also posted that he found it Lai Bhaari (too good). Later in the day the lyricist took to the site and wrote about the producers of the film Ameya Khopkar and Jitendra Thackeray apologised for the mistake. A close associate of Guru told us, "Guru is extremely hurt. It is really amusing that the makers forgot to invite the lyricist of the film for the music launch. There are five songs in the film. Guru has penned four songs and yet he was not invited. In fact Guru didn't even know about the event. It was a day later when his sister read about it in the newspaper that he got to know about it. It is really not done the way a lyricist like Guru was treated."

Poshter Boyz postponed due to Lai Bhaari

The release date of Riteish Deshmukh's Marathi debut film 'Lai Bhaari' has changed for over four to five times in the last six months. The final release date announced in May is July 11and it led to a change in the release date of another big budget film 'Poshter Boyz', produced by Shreyas Talpade. Though Shreyas had blocked July 4 as the release date for his film much in advance, he had to push it to August 1 to avoid a clash with Riteish's film. Upset with the whole scenario, Shreyas had told TOI, "I shifted my release date only because the makers of 'Lai Bhaari' have been very uncertain about the film's release date. They have changed dates from December to February to March. I spoke to them before announcing the release date of 'Poshter Boyz' and only after they told me that they were coming on May 1, did I decide to release my film on July 4. As industry seniors suggest that a minimum three week gap should be maintained between two big releases, I decided to take a good two month space. However, Riteish film's release date was randomly pushed to July 11. I tried talking to the film's makers but they were very stubborn and I failed to get a positive response from them. I was left with the option to either clash with them or push my release date. I chose to be the accommodating one and shifted the release date. As a producer this will cost me some financial losses but it is fine. "

Lokamnya Ek Yugpurush to clash with Rege

The makers of 'Rege' too are fuming after the release date for Lokmanya Ek Yugpurush was scheduled for August 15. Abhijit Panse had told in an interview, "It is an extremely unfortunate thing. We have been in talks with the makers of 'Lokamanya Ek Yugpurush' for the past six months. I had told them that I was releasing my film on August 15. Om had assured me that come what may he would not release the film on August 15. I have no clue about what happened but they have already finalised the same date for releasing their film as mine. It is not that no other film should release with mine but our audience will get divided."While clarifying his stand, Om said, "My film is based on an aggressive freedom fighter. Therefore we decided that we should release it on Independence Day. I had not pondered on any dates before this. Speaking about clashing with 'Rege' I don't feel that it will affect either of the films as August 15 is a Friday. It is a long weekend. Good cinema will do well. August 15 is the best day for the release of our film." Ravi Jadhav who is presenting the film 'Rege', said, "It is very unfortunate that two really good films are releasing on the same date. 'Rege's August 15 release date was announced in October last year and the promotional strategies were planned around it accordingly. 'Lokmanya Ek Yugpurush's trailers were attached to my film ‘TP – Timepass’ that released in January this year and post that its release date has changed several times."

Prasad Oak and Mahesh Manjrekar’s war of words

Actor Prasad Oak's status update targeting actor-filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar after he lost the election attracted a lot of attention from the industry. Prasad Oak had expressed relief over some Marathi artists losing at the Lok Sabha polls, as he felt that if they had won they would promote only few artists from the industry and others would be left neglected. While Mahesh Manjrekar preferred to stay calm in the beginning, he lashed out on the actor's statement at a cricket event. He said, "Yes this is my team and this is my camp. Only good performers get to work with me." Prasad however, remained firm on his statement even after that.

Sammit Kakkad and Laksham Gaikwad's tussle over ‘Uchalya’

The tussle between filmmaker Samit Kakkad and author Lakshman Gaikwad over the rights to make a film on Gaikwad's autobiographical novel 'Uchalya' seems to have been finally resolved. Director Samit Kakkad announced his film based on the novel starring Jitendra Joshi last year. Incidentally, around the same time, filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan also announced his film with Upendra Limaye as a lead based on the same novel. The issue was later taken to Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal last year, which ruled its decision in Kakkad's favour, following which the author filed a case of fraud against Samit for forging documents. Ananth Mahadevan and his producer Dinesh Bansal later approached Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association for relief but they have now ruled in Samit's favour. However, Gaikwad is unhappy with the way things have been going. When contacted, he said, "Samit is doing all this to get publicity. I had revoked the contract with him before signing another contract with Ananth. There is already a case of fraud against him pending in court, and now I will be filing a case of defamation against him. The associations which have ruled their decision in Samit's favour did not consider documents provided by me."
