Never expected Gulabi Sadi to go viral: Sanju Rathod

From Madhuri Dixit-Nene to Remo D’Souza, there’s hardly anyone who hasn’t shaken a leg to the viral Marathi song 'Gulabi Sadi'. Sanju Rathod and G-Spark’s track struck a chord with music lovers globally with its catchy lyrics and upbeat music. For Sanju, who has sung the track, this was unexpected. “It is overwhelming to see celebrities trying the hook step of our song on social media,” says Sanju, adding, “People have created multiple versions of the song in various Indian languages. I have received appreciation messages from renowned rappers like Divine and Badshah. Artistes from Pakistan and Bangladesh have also reached out to express their love for Gulabi Sadi. We knew the song would become popular but never expected it to go global.”

In fact, the singer says that people have told him that he re-popularised pink saris. “I remember receiving a call from my friend who owns a sari shop. He told me that a lot of women were purchasing pink saris specifically after listening to our song,” laughs Sanju.


‘Started rapping to impress my former girlfriend’Reflecting on his journey, Sanju, who hails from a small town called Dhanwad in Jalgaon (Maharashtra), reveals that he has had no formal training in singing but music is a creative outlet for his emotions. He recalls, “My former girlfriend was a huge fan of Yo Yo Honey Singh. I used to feel a bit insecure as she would constantly praise him and his music. So, I decided to try my hand at rapping just to impress her. We eventually went our separate ways, but I found joy in rapping and ventured into the world of music with my brother Gaurav Rathod, aka G-Spark.”
