Sports-centric flicks on rise in Punjab

A lot of

sports-centric films

are being made in Punjab. After Harjeeta, Khido Khundi (both based on hockey), Rocky Mental (boxing) etc, a new film based around kabaddi,

Saade Aale

will entertain the audiences. The film, which will see actor Sukhdeep Sukh acting opposite Deep Sidhu, will highlight village culture and life with the game (kabaddi) as a backdrop. Sukhdeep Sukh said, “It’s an emotional film highlighting several aspects of rural life which the youth of today has forgotten. In the film, we (Deep and I) are associated with the game to show how love eventually wins." Sukh lauded the efforts of

Punjabi cinema

for making films on the subject of sports. Deep Sidhu added, “Our culture is being ignored. But now it has come up very well.” Deep also stated that he’s doing another sports film which is a real-life story based on true events.
LOVE DOING SERIOUS ROLESWhile Punjabi films thrive on comedy, Sukh feels it’s the subject which sells these days. The actor who is always seen essaying serious roles, added, “Lot of people ask me to break my onscreen image. I feel transformation will happen only when I get a different role. So far, I am loving my serious image. In future I will be doing different roles, but I find playing serious and real-life characters challenging. "
NOT A BOLLYWOOD IMPACTWhen asked if it’s Bollywood which Punjabi cinema follows religiously, Sukh said, “If you are saying this because a lot of films inspired by sports subject are being made, it’s not true. We (Punjabi cinema) have a different way to deal with subjects. Also, our cinema is still experimenting, and due to its experimenting nature, many films have worked well."
