Cherry Singh: I used to get really emotional while singing all of Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab’s ‘Qawwalis’ - Exclusive

Punjabi singer Cherry Singh who has done songs like ‘Smokey Eyes’, ‘Sohna Mukhda’, and more has been a music lover since a very young age. During her recent interaction with ETimes, she shared how she started playing harmonium when she was only 5 or 6 years old. She confessed her love for Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab’s music and spilled beans on various other things.

Here are the excerpts from our conversation:

2/5

Falling for music

“So I had a musical instrument called harmonium at home when I was like 5-6 yrs old. I used to play with it when no one was around. And eventually got curious about the beauty of it. Somehow I managed to play ‘sa, re,ga’ on the harmonium; and yeah that’s how it kinda planted a seed in me.”

Inspiration while growing

“Ohkay! Now this one’s really special for me. It’s a long story but, I’ll make it short. So we had a CD player in our living room with loads of CDs of Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab. I used to listen to it day and night, and get really emotional while singing all of his ‘Qawwalis’. I find a roohani connection with his voice, music, and lyrics, and I didn’t need an ear to listen to his music it went straight to my heart.”

“I’m so thankful to God for that and later on growing up, I found more legendary artists like Surinder Kaur ji, Abeeda Praveen ji, Gurdas man ji, etc.”

4/5

What kind of music attracts you when you make songs? Do you follow trends or do you create your own trend?

“I am never into any particular genre. I like to stay where I vibe more but yeah sad romantic kinds get me. That too with good emotional lyrics. I believe in creativity, and I think creativity and trend are moving in separate ways nowadays.”

5/5

Upcoming projects

“Last year I was featured in the cast of upcoming musical web series called ‘Bandish Bandits 2’ which will be released on OTT. I have worked on different types of projects. As I said I prefer listening to music from my heart and the same goes for producing as well. So yeah you’ll get to hear some experimental yet good music soon.”
