This December 16, both of Mollywood's megastars will face stiff competition from crowdpullers such as Hollywood's Tom Cruise, Bollywood's Shah Rukh Khan and Kollywood's Vikram The year's coming to an end and like it is the norm, the biggest of blockbusters across film industries are all set to hit the screens. With Mollywood superstars Mohanlal's Oru Marubhoomi Katha and
Mammootty's Venicile Vyapari scheduled to hit the theatres on December 16, looks like the stage has just got bigger and grander.
The Mollywood movies, which were expected to be box office heists till now, will go up against Hollywood heartthrob Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 4. And if that's not enough, they will be fighting off Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan's Don 2, which hits the screens only the week after. Add to that a mix Kollywood films, the recently released Simbu's Osthe, and Vikram's Rajapattai, which is scheduled for a December 23 release all of which will battle it out to claim a big chunk of the audience holidaying during
Christmas in Kerala.
However, the producers of the Mollywood films seem confident about the movies doing well. Film producer Madhavan Nair of Venicile Vyapari, says, "We are aware of the competition. But we are also confident that
our film will be well appreciated by the audience. This year has proved to be a testament of sorts that the family audience will come to theatres to encourage unique and fresh cinema and our film falls in
that category," he adds. The film, set against the backdrop of the 80s, features Mammootty in three different get ups with superhit filmmaker Shafi at the helm.
Meanwhile, Oru Marubhoomi Katha is looking to rake in the crowds with the return of Mollywood's all-time great combination of
Priyadarshan, Mohanlal and Mukesh after a gap of 10 years. The film's producer,
Ashok Kumar, says, "The comedy in the movie is on par with Kilukkam and the audience will compare it to the golden age of the 90s. More competition would only mean that the initial (collection) may see a slight drop. But a good movie is guaranteed to run close to 100 days or more."
The positive trend to be noticed here is that unlike the previous years, Mollywood has not shied away from competition and has put their best on the table. However, it's probable that this might not be instinctive but due to peer pressure as more than seven Mollywood films that have been delayed due to the strike are waiting for release. And they need the big guns to fire first.
