Sai Pallavi made her debut in Tamil as a lead with the 2018 film 'Diya', which was directed by AL Vijay. But a year before it, Mani Ratnam had approached Sai Pallavi to play the lead character in his romantic drama 'Kaatru Veliyidai'. Sai Pallavi was the first choice for the lead character as a doctor opposite Karthi in the film, which was later played by Aditi Rao Hydari. Having been a real-life medical student, Mani Ratnam clearly believed that Sai Pallavi would have done justice to the role of a doctor. However, that didn’t work out and Aditi was eventually roped in.

The romantic drama 'Kaatru Veliyidai' was released during the summer of 2017, and it received positive reviews from critics and the audience. The music of the film was composed by AR Rahman while the cinematography was handled by Ravi Varman.
