A look at Ilaiyaraaja's legal battles over copyrights issues

Ilaiyaraaja is one of the veteran composers in Indian cinema, and he has scored music for 1000 songs. As a musical lover, it's hard to pass a day without hearing a song composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The legendary composer is an inspiration for many, and several filmmakers and composers opt to recreate his songs in their movies. However, sometimes the musicians have faced trouble for recreating Ilaiyaraaja's songs without proper permission from the composer. Ilaiyaraaja has sent some legal notices on copyright infringement to several filmmakers. Here is a look at Ilaiyaraaja's battle of copyrights.

Ilaiyaraaja vs SPB

Ilaiayaraaja taking on singer SP Balasubramaniam a few years back has shocked fans as the duo worked together for several superhit songs. Ilaiyaraaja sent a legal notice to SP Balasubramaniam to sing his songs in a public event and the two friends were involved in a battle. Ilaiyaraaja later won the battle as the court ordered filmmakers to not use the composer's songs in their films and paid events.

Ilaiyaraaja vs Shankar

In 2015, Shankar's production venture 'Kappal' had Ilaiyaraaja's song 'Ooru Vittu Ooru Vandhu' for a glimpse of the film. Ilaiyaraaja then raised a legal battle with Shankar for using his song and sent a legal notice. Later, the makers sorted out the issue smoothly by fulfilling the demands of the composer.

Ilaiyaraaja vs Govind Vasantha

Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha starrer '96' had several songs of Ilaiyaraaja and the composer Govind Vasantha recreated some classic songs. But Ilaiyaraaja mocked the composer by issuing some degrading comments against the composer. Govind Vasantha humbly handled the issue by calling him a fan of Ilaiyaraaja forever.

Ilaiyaraaja vs 'Coolie'

Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' title teaser had a glimpse of 'Va Va Pakkam Va' from the actor's vintage film 'Thangamagan'. The recreation of the original song composed by Ilaiyaraaja has caused a problem for the film. Ilaiyaraaja has sent a legal notice to the makers of 'Coolie' and the composer's team asked the makers to seek proper permission or to remove the song from the title teaser.
