Veteran South Indian actor and Padma Shri recipient S Sukumari passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on Tuesday evening after battling burns suffered following an accident at her B N Road residence in T Nagar last month. Her recent films in Tamil include Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Vettaikaaran. She was 74 and Sukumari suffered burns when her sari caught fire from a lamp while she was praying in her pooja room in the morning of February 27 at her T Nagar residence. However on 26 March, she died of a heart attack she had suffered from while recovering.Her career has lasted for more than 50 years and she has acted in different roles and different languages in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Oriya and Bengali, presumably in about 2,500 movies. she is a versatile actress who can carry off any role. Her range is so vast that we have seen her act as a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She started her career at the age of 10 (she was born in 1940). She shared the screen with big names, including Mamooty, Mohanlal, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan and also yesteryear stars MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Nageswara Rao and Prem Nazir.
