'Coolie’ to ‘Ayutha Ezhuthu’: FIVE most anticipated Tamil films that were certified ‘A’ by the CBFC

In Tamil cinema, certain films stand out for their unique storytelling styles — and some of them receive an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC due to intense violence, extreme political themes, high emotional tension, or depictions of morally controversial acts. Interestingly, several of these films have been widely acclaimed and have generated significant buzz among fans. Here’s a look at five highly anticipated Tamil films that received an ‘A’ certificate.

2/6

'Coolie'

Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film 'Coolie', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has been awarded an ‘A’ certificate by the CBFC for its excessive violence and intense fight sequences. This marks Rajinikanth’s first film in 36 years to receive an ‘A’ certificate. The pan-Indian action drama has fans eagerly waiting, although many have taken to social media requesting a ‘U/A’ version so it can be enjoyed by family audiences as well.

3/6

'Raayan'

Dhanush’s directorial venture 'Raayan' revolves around the gangster mafia, set against a rural backdrop. The CBFC granted it an ‘A’ certificate due to its gritty and violent scenes. Featuring several leading actors alongside Dhanush, the film raised high expectations both for his performance and his directorial skills. However, the ‘Adults Only’ certification was believed to have impacted its box office performance.

4/6

'Super Deluxe'

Directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, 'Super Deluxe' is a thought-provoking and genre-bending film that challenges societal norms. With Vijay Sethupathi playing a transgender character, the film explores complex themes of sexuality, religion, and family. Its bold visuals and layered storytelling earned it an ‘A’ certificate. Super Deluxe went on to redefine the boundaries of Tamil cinema.

5/6

'Billa 2'

A prequel to the 2007 hit 'Billa', 'Billa 2' follows the transformation of its protagonist into a feared don. Starring Ajith, the film received an ‘A’ certificate for its physically intense and psychologically demanding action sequences. Known for its stylish execution and memorable dialogues, the film became a cult favourite despite receiving mixed reviews.

6/6

'Ayutha Ezhuthu'

Mani Ratnam’s 'Ayutha Ezhuthu' is a politically charged drama centred on youth, governance, and social change. Starring Suriya, Madhavan, and Siddharth, the film received an ‘A’ certificate for its strong political commentary and realistic depictions of violence. It remains a defining political drama in Tamil cinema.
